Safari-Style Luxury in the Wild
After a day exploring forest-shrouded Maya ruins or hiking through verdant highlands, guests arrive to a remote campsite where they’re welcomed with cold towels and a drink in hand.
Campsites are carefully chosen for their views and atmosphere – an unspoilt view of 3 volcanoes, a rainforest clearing, or a plaza between ancient temples. Sunrises, sunsets and starry skies.
Each spacious tent feels like a cosy bedroom and include proper beds – one king or two twins – with comfy pillows and duvets, en-suite eco-bathroom with filtered washing station, composting toilet and open-air gravity hot shower.
A private camp chef prepares fresh, locally inspired meals, served under a dining tarp with glassware and tableware you’d never expect in the middle of nowhere. After dinner, guests gather around afirepit or infront of a candle-lit temple for a night cap and to swap stories under a blanket of stars.
This is luxury glamping, Central America style – always rooted in the landscape and local culture. The use of mobile tents also means Beyond Expeditions is a “leave no trace” operation - only positive impact for the communities involved.
Transformational Journeys: Beyond the Tourist Trail
Beyond Expeditions is not just about a beautiful camp; it’s about the expeditions that surround it. Each journey is designed to be challenging in the right ways and deeply rewarding – the kind of trip guests “take home with them” and talk about for years.
Common threads across all Beyond expeditions:
Memorable local encounters and meaningful cultural exchange
Challenging yet rewarding hikes and journeys (with support vehicles where appropriate)
Visits to remote Maya sites, often guided by archaeologists or expert local guides
Routes that follow ancient footpaths, trading routes and jungle tracks
A deliberate digital detox and reconnection with nature and self
Example Journey: Uaxactún & Tikal – Jungle Camp & Ruins (Guatemala)
A two-day / one-night adventure that pairs Tikal with the quieter, more intimate world of Uaxactún.
Drive deep into the jungle beyond Tikal to the indigenous settlement of Uaxactún.
Walk with local women who harvest xate leaves and men who extract chicle sap used in chewing gum.
Sleep in a boutique camp nestled among the ruins, with dinner by candlelight and night walks to spot nocturnal wildlife.
Wake to the sound of birds and howler monkeys before heading into Tikal via a little-known “back door” entrance for a more exclusive immersion in the site.
Perfect add-on to a classic Guatemala itinerary; ideal for guests who want a soft introduction to Beyond Expedition’s jungle camps.
Example Journey: Highlands to Lake Atitlán – Alaska Region Expedition
A multi-day journey across Guatemala’s less-visited Northern Highlands, combining mountain hiking, biking and culture.
Follow rural footpaths past adobe settlements, sacred Maya sites and dense pine forest in the “Guatemala Alaska” mountain range.
Visit families who share tortilla-making, traditional weaving and community reforestation projects.
Overnight in secluded highland camps with panoramic views (on clear days) of up to 11 volcanic peaks.
Continue across the plains on foot and by bike (with 4×4 backup for non-cyclists), finishing with a spectacular descent towards Lake Atitlán, often called one of the world’s most beautiful lakes.
Variations include a shorter two-day hike to Lake Atitlán or a non-active variation for travellers with less time.
Example Journey: El Mirador Heli Camp – Lost Cities by Air & Foot
For clients who gravitate toward “once in a lifetime” luxury expeditions, this overnight heli-assisted exploration is a standout.
Scenic helicopter flight deep into the Maya Biosphere Reserve, touching down at remote Nakbé.
Hike along an ancient Maya causeway or hop back in the helicopter to reach El Mirador, dominated by the monumental La Danta pyramid – one of the largest in the Maya world.
Sunset from the temple top over endless jungle canopy and no-one for miles around, followed by a candle-lit camp dinner beneath the trees.
Sunrise from El Tigre temple and further exploration, often with archaeologists on site to share current discoveries.
Other combinations are possible and can include sites such as Rio Azul, EL Quinal, Holmul, La Sufricaya & Nakum
This is true expedition travel, ideal for high-value clients who have seen much of the world and are looking for something truly rare.
