On the Road In Charleston & Savannah: Why In-Person Still Matters
This month, our team was on the road in Charleston and Savannah, spending time with a group of exceptional travel advisors and sharing more about our collection of culturally-rooted DMCs.
But more than that, it was a reminder of something increasingly important in today's travel landscape.
In an industry built on speed, digital communication and constant information flow, the strongest partnerships are still built in person.
Over cocktails at The Dewberry in Charleston, over coffee and a walk through Forsyth Park in Savannah, and around the tables shared across both cities, conversations moved beyond introductions. They become more honest, more detailed, and more reflective of how we actually work together.
What came up consistently in those conversations was not just the value of connection, but a clearer understanding of what actually drives the quality of a trip, and how to work more effectively with DMC partners.
A quick read for busy advisors:
A DMC is responsible for how a trip is delivered, not just how it is designed
The strongest trips start with clarity around brief, budget and expectations
The way a DMC is brought into the process directly shapes the outcome
Why A DMC Is More Than Just "Another Way To Book"
A DMC is not simply another way to book a trip. It is the in-country team responsible for designing, operating and delivering the experience from start to finish.
They are managing suppliers, coordinating logistics and resolving issues in real time, often before the client is even aware of them. The quality of the experience is shaped in those moments, not in the proposal.
It is easy to underestimate this when everything looks strong on paper. In practice, execution lives locally, in the hands of the people delivering the trip.
Clarity at the outset shapes everything that follows
One of the clearest patterns we see is that strong trips are not built from inspiration alone. They are built from clarity at the outset.
Clarity around what the client actually wants, what level of experience they expect and what the budget needs to cover.
When that foundation is in place, a DMC can design with precision. They can prioritise what matters, make the right trade-offs and shape a journey that feels seamless, both in how it runs and how it is experienced.
When it is not, the process becomes slower, less aligned and requires more back-and-forth than it needs to be.
The quality of what a DMC delivers is directly shaped by the clarity of the input.
Partnership, not transaction
The most effective advisor-DMC relationships are not built through one-off enquiries. They develop over time, through consistent communication, shared understanding and mutual trust.
A DMC works best when treated as an extension of your team. Their value lies not only in what they book, but in how they think, how they problem-solve and how they operate behind the scenes.
It also shows up in the quality of the design itself, in how experiences are selected, paced and connected to feel cohesive rather than assembled.
The strongest partnerships are the ones where both sides are set up to do their best work. When that happens, the process becomes more efficient and the outcome more consistent.
Why curation matters more than ever
As the number of suppliers continues to grow, so does the complexity of choosing the right ones.
Not every DMC operates at the same level. Not every partnership will align with how you work.
At Travel Kinship, our role is to act as a filter.
The DMCs within our collection are selected not just for where they operate, but for how they operate. They are locally owned, often owner-led, and deeply embedded in their destinations, with the relationships and operational strength required to deliver consistently.
This allows advisors to move with more confidence, knowing the foundation behind the trip is strong.
And just as importantly, it gives you direct access to the people behind the work.
The owners of these DMCs are not removed from the process. They are actively involved in how trips are designed, managed and delivered. Understanding how they think, what they prioritise and how they operate gives a much clearer sense of what your clients will experience on the ground.
These conversations are reflected in our Voices of Kinship interview series, where we share the perspectives of the people behind each destination.
