Southern India - a place of sacred stillness, secluded shores and soulful depth which, while well-trodden, can still be life-affirming, revelatory and profoundly personal - in the right hands.
For us, those hands are always those of Anecdotes DMC.
Their ability to peel back the layers of India is unmatched, revealing the stories, rituals and rhythms that travellers rarely encountered. And here, we turn from the desert cities, marble icons and mighty peaks of the North* to discover some of Anecdotes’ signature experiences in the Indian South, with its monsoon-fed jungles, temple towns and coastlines that have called to explorers for centuries.
This is where days begin with temple bells or martial chants, where rivers curve past coconut groves and prayer and performance combine. Here, traditions are lived, rhythm is ritual and travellers aren’t just invited to see, but to slow down and participate too. Inviting your guests to discover this slower, softer India - through the ancient landscapes of Hampi, the palm-lined backwaters of Kerala and overlooked pockets of cultural richness in Goa - these curated experiences are thoughtful by design, chosen to immerse while they impress.
And these destinations? Each one is a doorway to a more intimate India which, with Anecdotes’ rare access and deep local knowledge, offers a journey that’s enriching, illuminating and truly unforgettable. Let’s dive deeper…
Hampi: Echoes of Empire, Stillness and Sound
Tucked deep in the Southern state of Karnataka, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hampi has a surreal, otherworldly feel.
In this place where gods were worshipped and stories handed down over generations, giant boulders teeter like sculptures above the sunburnt plain - an unforgettably dramatic setting for the ruins of the once-mighty Vijayanagara Empire which now, scattered among the rocks, emerging from fields and flanking dry riverbeds, still radiate their ancient grandeur.
To “do” Hampi at its experiential best, Anecdotes’ local storyteller guides guests through the majestic ruins and sacred temples, weaving myth and memory into every stop, bringing centuries of myth and empire to life and setting the tone for a deeper, more immersive connection to this extraordinary landscape… one which is an Anecdotes’ favourite in the region - a deeply restorative sound bath, held in a natural cave and led by a practitioner who understands both the landscape and its unique energies.
Here, guests are guided into stillness through the healing vibrations of gongs, bowls and chimes, each sound echoing off the cool darkness of the cavern walls to quiet the mind and soothe the senses - offering a rare moment of pause between self and setting.
And the unhurried pace continues here with two deliciously languid ways to experience the calm and cuisine of the area. One begins in the soft light of morning, with a satvik breakfast served by the river - fresh, local and nourishing in every way.
Then, a walk through the hamlet of Anegundi is a showcase of local life and quiet charm, perfectly followed by a slow, scenic drive through the Jungli Valley in a laid-back, tractor-drawn trailer fitted with beds - think birdsong, rustling palms and scenery that reveals itself at its own pace.
Later, it’s time for another kind of serene feast with a private North Karnataka lunch laid out just for your guests at an exclusive farmhouse, set in a spot so secluded it feels entirely their own.
Surrounded by boulders and silence, it’s an experience of deep sensory rest - underpinned beautifully by a presentation of local artisanship with a handicraft showcase by the Kishkinda Trust.
The Quiet Waters and Cultural Rituals of Kerala
Kerala has long been celebrated for its beauty - its mirror-like backwaters, the lush sway of coconut groves and the richness of spices creating a heady and irresistible mix. But with Anecdotes’ the experience goes beyond the postcard-perfect, with adventures handpicked to create a deeper dialogue for your clients with the land and its people.
One day, guests can glide through the canal waterways of Alleppey, known as the “Venice of the East” aboard a kettuvalam (traditional rice barge), watching village life unfold in slow motion as it has for untold generations: women washing clothes at the water’s edge, fishermen casting nets, church bells tolling somewhere behind the coconut trees.
The next might see them sitting cross-legged in the thatched courtyard of a Kalaripayattu training ground, witnessing India’s oldest martial art in motion. Spiritual and scientific; precise, powerful and meditative, this ancient practice blends movement, discipline and healing, with origins rooted in Kerala’s fascinating warrior traditions and weapons ranging from swords, daggers and spears to maces and bow and arrows. With Anecdotes, your guests will have the chance not only to see the lessons and understand the unbelievable coordination needed between mind and body, but also to learn some of the philosophy behind the form.
And the backwaters may be Kerala’s postcard signature, but its real riches are cultural - expressed in slow moments rather than monuments. Take evenings here, which have a different energy entirely, especially in the flickering shadows of a Kathakali performance. Kerala’s classical dance-drama is unlike anything else - part theatre, part ritual and totally mesmerising.
With Anecdotes, guests are offered a rare, close-up insight as the artists prepare - watching the painstaking application of the elaborate face paint, hearing the percussionists prepare and discovering how eye movements alone can express a universe of emotion.
And to complete the experience in this unmissable region? How about a guided exploration of Vaikom, a serene village near Kumarakom, which is the perfect place to become more immersed in a simple, rural life. This is a place where artisan weavers create hand-spun and hand-woven cloths of cotton, silk and wool, coir ropes from dried coconut husks and straw mats from wild pineapple leaves - the way things have been done and life has been lived for millennia here in Kerala.
Beyond the Beaches in Goa
Goa is so often misunderstood these days - seen as all beaches, tourist throngs and pumping nightlife.
But here in the tropical west, the fusion of Portuguese and Konkani heritage has created a distinct cultural identity, one best discovered through slow explorations and warm conversations. The trick is to explore the old Goa - the one of ochre churches and faded mansions, of places both traditional and Portuguese-influenced and the one redolent with the tastes and scents of regional drinks and delicacies.
Luckily, Anecdotes’ Goa unfolds far from the beaten path. Blending natural beauty and urban heritage in a tour that moves from river to road, a tour of Aguada and Fontainhas goes from river to quarter, beginning with a scenic boat ride that glides past the governor’s residence and up the Mandovi River, opening into a guided exploration of the Aguada Fort and its colonial-era jail complex.
After time to browse a curated flea market, your guests’ route continues into Fontainhas - the old Latin Quarter, whose pastel houses, Catholic shrines and local cafés keep the Indo-Portuguese legacy alive. Here, visitors can absorb a Goa that blends both past and future, wandering from gallery to bakery, boutique to bar as they wish.
For those spending time in Old Goa’s UNESCO-listed beauty, a short ferry ride opens up another world entirely on Divar Island, where life moves to a distinctly slower beat. Here, travellers can e-bike a peaceful path along empty roads that wind alongside green meadows and glassy lakes, spotting the ancient temples and pre-Portuguese sites that dot the landscape and tell stories that long predate colonial Goa.
Continuing the journey back to nature and tradition, Anecdotes’ Goan village tour, “The Secrets of Goa”, is a brilliantly immersive way to take an intimate peek at real local life. Guests stroll with a local guide to meet fishermen casting their nets with artful precision, and visit the village potter shaping clay with timeless skill.
One of the most memorable moments? Meet the toddy tapper - a man who scales towering palms to harvest the sap that becomes Goa’s favourite homegrown brew and whose story is one of craft, courage and connection.
And let’s not forget to take a taste of Old Goa that goes far beyond the beach bars!
A private masterclass dedicated to the region’s proudest local spirit - Feni - takes guests to a traditional distillery, where cashew, coconut and Dukshiri Feni are swirled, sniffed and sipped in a hands-on tasting session designed to engage all the senses. Alongside it comes a curated platter of local pairings which, being earthy, bold and colourful, are the perfect example of the textures and tastes that define Goa’s culinary soul.
